Sign language is on its way to becoming an official language in South Africa. It has already been officially recognised as a home language in the education system. The public has had time to comment on a proposed amendment of the Constitution to make sign language South Africa’s 12th official language. As today is the first of September, it is the beginning of Deaf Awareness Month. The aim of this campaign is to promote awareness of deaf persons in South Africa, as well as equality for deaf people. To tell us more we are joined by Samora Mbuyazi, a Social Auxiliary Worker who works with Deaf Federation of South Africa otherwise known as DeafSA.
