CHICAGO (WLS) — Chicago police are looking for the person who sexually assaulted a deaf woman and robbed her on the city’s Southwest Side Thursday.
Police said the attack happened in the 2700-block of West 65th Street just after 3 p.m. No specific details of the attack have been released.
While police gathered evidence at the apartment building where the attack happened, neighbors were stunned by what happened and the person it happened to.
“Very horrible. Horrible. It is so crazy,” said Mark Bernard, lives in same building.
“To hear somebody got attacked right across the street, that is sad and frightening,” said Sharon Powers, neighbor.
The building is gated and secured. Police have also not released the age of the victim or any further details other than that she is deaf. Neighbors said she also cannot speak.
A neighbor who asked not to be identified said the woman ran from the building in tears, flagged down a neighbor, and had to write on a piece of paper what happened to her.
“She was laid down on the floor, crying, and I feel sorry for her,” the neighbor said.
The victim was taken to a nearby hospital. Police worked with an American Sign Language interpreter to take her statement.
“She’s very nice. She can’t speak, but when she sees me she just waves her hands, say hi and all that,” Bernard said. No details about the suspect have been released.
Area Central detectives are investigating. No one is currently in custody. It’s unclear how the attacker entered the residence, but police said initially this does not appear to have been a home invasion.
