Faraon is a deaf dog who learned to communicate through sign language. The canine now responds to basic commands, as seen in images filmed on Friday in Buenos Aires. The abandoned dog arrived to El Campito animal shelter last October and, although it went through an adaptation period, its hostile temperament towards humans and other dogs did not improve, as it did not respond to attempts at communication from handlers. After a veterinary check-up, it was discovered that the animal was deaf. Since then, trainers have begun teaching Faraon sign language, so the dog could learn basic commands. “Like the ‘still’, ‘stop’, ‘relax’, ‘look at me’ [commands]. So with those signs, what we’re trying to do is to make the dog feel safe when it’s doing the exercise,” explained Betina Verdaguer, one of the trainers. Since he was able to communicate with his handlers, the character of Faraon improved and he became more sociable. “Faraon was up until the moment he came here, to the shelter, an absolutely misunderstood dog. I think you can compare it a little bit with what happens with us and the disabilities in humans. I think the exact same thing happened here,” said Verdaguer. The ultimate goal of the shelter is to find a family to adopt Faraon.
