We are all deeply saddened and concerned to learn of the allegations of misconduct by former faculty and staff at the American School for the Deaf (ASD). The findings can be found at https://www.asd-1817.org/findings.

We want to emphasize that the ASD findings are not unique. Many institutions in the United States and Canada, including schools for the deaf, have dealt with sexual misconduct and physical abuse over the years. Rather, these most recent findings serve as painful reminders of the abuse our community has endured for decades, and the critical need for continued support today of current and past survivors. We extend our heartfelt support to the ASD survivors, the entire ASD community, and survivors everywhere that have endured similar trauma.
a
This is another reminder of our need to support a culture that first and foremost prevents abuse, then exposes abusers and provides support for survivors. As a community, it is through difficult times that we must come together in support of one another. Though the allegations of abuse at ASD happened decades ago, the trauma of these experiences can last a lifetime. Students and alumni who need support may contact Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) to make an appointment for confidential services, Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
a
CAPS is also available for crises and emergencies over the weekend. CAPS is located on the third floor of the Kellogg Conference Hotel, and can be reached by videophone at 202-250-2300. Staff and faculty, and teachers may contact the Employee Assistance Program (EAP).

At Gallaudet, nothing is more important than the safety and well-being of our community. We have zero tolerance for abuse and inappropriate behavior of any kind. Prevention is the most powerful tool we can use to protect our community against future incidents. As an Executive Team, we will be reviewing all policies and protocols at the University and at KDES and MSSD to identify any areas where we can strengthen our systems to protect our community and support survivors. Further, I encourage all members of the Gallaudet community to remain steadfast in reporting any potential misconduct so it can be thoroughly investigated. Title IX concerns can be reported at https://www.gallaudet.edu/title-ix/ma…, and anonymous whistleblower reports can be filed at https://www.gallaudet.edu/risk-manage….

The ASD survivors have shown extraordinary courage and bravery. We must do everything in our power to ensure that our community is safe and protected, and we must continue to evaluate our policies, programs, and service to that end. Our support has never been more critical, and I know you will all join me in our commitment to prevention and support for those in need.
